Feathers on the Wind
At the foot of Fish Hawk mountain in a holler called Peaks Cove
Becky lit a candle off the pilot of her stove
The strongest storm in years had knocked the power out that night
So she held her child and they huddled round the light
Becky’s husband Brian was working late again
Helping with the rescue squad, the calls kept pouring in
knowing that his pregnant wife and son were safe at home
He thought about the happy days to come
But the thread of life is thin – It changes like the weather
We fly through time together just like feathers on the wind
And only angels know, how hard that wind will blow
or when the flight is coming to an end
Now the rain it just kept coming, the soil had turned to mud
Trees were snappin’ in the wind, the creek began to flood
Becky kissed her little boy and whispered in his ear
Daddy will be home soon, so don’t you fear
But the mountain couldn’t take it, like a freight train on a track
It was on them in an instant, it was over with the crack
of an oak tree crashing through the house, it struck the young boy down
The twisting rubble pinned her to the ground
A flashlight pierced the darkness, they pulled her out alive
She cried out for her little boy, but only she survived
In the ambulance with Brian, drowning in their pain
They knew nothing would ever be the same
Now they’ve overcome the panic but the sorrow never dies
The need to find a reason still wells up in their eyes
So they hold on to their memories, they hold on to their love
They hold on to a promise from above
When you think you’ve been forsaken and your heart is caving in
Hold on to your faith and keep on going
Take comfort knowing that you’ll all meet up again
But for now, the winds of change will keep on blowing to the end
Chorus — Until then we’re just feathers on the wind
